A bite of “Adams’ Apples”

April 22, 2011

What could be more embarrassing for a 56-year-old woman returning home on her birthday, with a man’s hand firmly tacked in her bra and having the lights go up with everyone shouting SURPRISE!!!! surprised? Well, that must be seriously embarrasing huh? Considering that your entire family including grand-daughter are all part of the surprise party. Aiiishh!

Here are Adams' Apples

Well, that was how movie director Shirley Frimpong-Manso chose to start her ten-part movie, Adams’ Apples… and verily, verily I say unto thee…my dead tired eyes were at the National Theater last night [Thursday] to catch the premiere. Surely, I would not miss it for …well all the promised sexiness, sassy and wahalaing, lol!

So, it was my first time attending a movie premiere at the National Theater and boy was I scared or what? I got to the venue at about 15mins to 8pm only to see scores of cars parked at the venue. I thought folks had come way too early for the second screening which was to start at 8:30pm. Well I had every right to be there early, so don’t be asking me that question … I mean I don’t have my own car [at least not yet] so I had to get there early if I was to ‘survive’ all the traffic if you get my point?

So it was 8:15 thereabouts and the folks from the 6:30pm screening started trooping out of the theater then I realised that I had forgotten two screenings were scheduled for the night. But that was not my headache. My headache was the fact that grow-ass folks were pushing and shoving in the queue we’d been asked to form to use another entry to the main hall of the National Theater.

For crying out loud, if this was happening on the University of Ghana [UG] campus, I would understand. You see, Shirley usually premieres at the Drama Studio of the School of Performing Arts which seats just about 500 people or a little over that. So I can understand if the students are pushing their way through the narrow gate to secure a seat but when a 1500 plus capacity Theater is the venue for the premiere, i seriously don’t understand and see why folks were pushing very hard to get their way. The annoying part of the whole wahala was that the screening started just around 9pm, probably a deliberate ploy on the part of the organizers to ensure at least everyone was seated before screening began…so what the fuss?

Anyway, the movie itself was colourful as usual, a trademark of Shirley’s films. And this time round, it was not only colourful because of the captivating locations at which parts of the movie were shot but colourful also by way of costume. The cast were smartly clothed in GTP fabric [and no, I don't intend doing a free ad for the cloth manufacturer but I think they did a good thing partnering her and whoever designed the clothes was dammmmnnn talented!!]

Ok, I’ve spoken at length about nothing really, so let’s talk a bit about the movie proper. The movie revolves round the Adams Family. You have Mrs Adams [played by KSM's sister, Anima Misa Amoa]  and her three daughters Jennifer [played by Viasat 1 talkshow host, Jocelyn Dumas], Baaba [Yvonne Okoro] and Kuukua [Naa Ashokor Mensah-Doku].

Mrs. Adams is a widowed Diplomat…are you getting confused? Let me help you out. She is the wife of a former diplomat who is dead. So the movie starts on the night of her birthday when he ‘girls’ had planned a surprise party for her ostensibly because she likes throwing parties herself. But unfortunately, she arrive home making out with a stranger [football coach and commentator, Nana Agyemang] she met at a restaurant whose hand was tacked in her brassier. Now don’t ask me what his hand was doing there.

Obviously her action embarrased her daughters, particularly Jennifer who comes across as the no-nonsense, strong woman. She is single and is so career focused. She does not come across as one who is ready to settle down for marriage, at least with all her silicon vibrators keeping her company? Mann, don’t venture.

There is Baaba who is nursing plans of divorcing her husband Chris. As for what exactly Chris did wrong, I’m sure chapter 2 of Adams Apples will throw more light on it.

A happy Director with some cast members

Kuukua who appears to be the youngest of the Adams Apples, arrives at work one morning to discover that her old flame Denu [played by John Dumelo] is coming to do some research work at her Advertising firm. Well the truth really was that Denu’s father who owns another Advertising company was considering a merger of the two firms. But Kuukua is not comfortable with the idea and appeals to Denu to talk his father out of it.

From the look of things, Adams Apples is going to be one heck of a twisted story considering the fact that there are 9 more chapters to follow the release of the first chapter. It started showing at the Silver Bird cinema today so you better catch and don’t say you’re waiting for the DVD/VCD to buy cos seriously, I don’t think there’s going to be one…at least not in the interim.

So Adams Apples promises to be sexy, sassy and with plenty wahala. Hmmm. I have seen the sexy in some of the scenes with some making outs already, the sassy – if I get its meaning right could stand for fashionable or high-spirited…at least I’ve seen the up class, dead gorgeous afropolitan gear in action movie and as for the wahala, hmm for me it started at the gate with all the rush to watch the movie so let’s just keep it there for now. And let’s see what Chapter 2 holds as it premieres in June.
